“Red Slip-trail Plate”

Ř       Duration: fairly short (2-3 hrs)  
Materials needed: 5 lbs. of Low-fire red clay, HS03 slump, black mason stains for slip, one yard of canvas, XL rolling pin, Sandbag (place one cup of play sand into handkerchief and tie to close), clay needle, small round sponge, medium glaze brush, squeeze bottle for slip trail. Small dowel rod.

Roll out slab big enough for HS03 slump. Mark & trim around slump.

Lay over plate slump & pounce with sandbag.

Trim edge. You can make it round or notched as shown

Smooth edge with a round sponge. Be sure not to add too much pressure (and thin the edge.) Smooth inside with sponge.

Pour regular white slip and slip mixed with black mason stains into 2 separate squeeze bottles.

Alternating between the 2 colors of slip. Make lines across middle of plate

Lay a dowel rod across plate. With clay needle, draw lines across the slip-lines. Do this across the entire center. Be careful not to go too deep.

With white slip make designs around outside edge and line the inside edge of circle.

Dry Thoroughly. Fire to a witness cone .04. Glaze with clear glaze and fire as instructed.
